SLMS not working after upgrade from version 1.2 to 1.3

This document (7012367) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

SUSE Studio 1.2 and 1.3
SUSE Lifecycle Management Server 1.2 and 1.3

After a migration of a SUSE Lifecycle Management Server (SLMS) system from version 1.2 to 1.3 is performed, under some circumstances, SLMS may stop working due to a database inconsistency.

This only happens if you still have some registered nodes against an appliance, that had previously been removed from Studio.

The way of the migration (on-line via wagon, booting the media) does not have any effect on the result.

Before you start the migration of SLMS 1.3, make sure, that no nodes are registered against an appliance, that is not existant in SUSE Studio any more. This will avoid the issue.

If you have already upgraded SLMS and you experience the issue, SLMS will report an inconsistence of the database and will fail to syncronize appliances. If it happens,
have a look into the log file of the failed Studio synchronization. You will find lines similar to following:

PDATE "nodes" SET "appliance_id" = NULL WHERE "nodes"."appliance_id" = 2 AND "nodes"."id" IN (2)

Note the ID of the failing appliance following the "appliance_id =" (in this case, 2). Go to

and delete all nodes assigned to the appliance. Afterwards, refreshing appliances will work again.

It will not be possible to update such an appliance any more, unless you install the SLMS maintenance update (version 1.3.2-0.5.2 or greater).
