Environment

Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows (IR2)
Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Workstation Bundle with Universal Restore

Situation

Unable to login after imaging and restoring the Windows 7 workstation using Acronis software.

When logging in using the Novell Credential Provider, the following error is displayed

"Waiting for network to initialize" [Cancel]

which never responds, and requires the user press Cancel, then login computer only. A subsequent Red N login also fails, with "A required network service has not started. Please check your logs for details."

Checking the Application log in Event Viewer, two useful errors are listed:

"The Novell Client File System Redirector service depends on the Novell XTCOM Driver service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has not enabled devices associated with it."

"The Novell Xplat IoCtl Driver service depends on the Novell XTCOM Driver service which failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has not enabled devices associated with it."

Resolution

Set the "Start" value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NICM]  to 0x1 (SERVICE_SYSTEM_START). This can be done in a post-cloning script.

Cause

A Process Monitor log from boot shows that when Windows attempts to start NICM.SYS, the "Start" value in the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NICM] key is set to 0x4 (SERVICE_DISABLED).  In this state, NICM.SYS is deliberately configured /not/ to start.
