Network recommendations for enteprise deployment of iPrint Appliance with AirPrint

This document (7012895) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

iPrint Appliance
DNS
Airprint
Bonjour

Situation

In the iPrint Appliance documentation, there is a section called: "AirPrint Deployment Considerations in iPrint Appliance." In this section it talks about network requirements.  These requirements are:

  • Wireless network with no interconnection (no routers involved, every device on the same 'network')
  • IP Multicast network (IP Multicast must be enabled on network devices such as routers and switches)
Reading further into these requirements means that you would either have to:

  • Have a single subnet network where the iPrint Appliance, wireless clients, and printers all reside on the same network segment. In small deployments this is probably how the network is already setup and there is no issue. In an enterprise environment, this is impossible.
  • Enable forwarding of multi-cast frames across routers. This leads to increased traffic across different networks and poor wireless performance.
