"No AirPrint Printers Found" when trying to print from iOS device.

This document (7012895) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

iPrint Appliance
DNS

Situation

When attempting to print from an App which searches for printers using AirPrint, the message "No AirPrint Printers Found" is returned.

iOS Apps which use AirPrint are:
  • Camera
  • Notes
  • Mail
  • Safari
  • Chrome
  • Dropbox
Note 1: Not all apps are listed.
Note 2: The following iOS Apps are known to work with the Novell iPrint App:
  • Adobe Reader
  • Attachments in Mail app (except for photos)
This error message cited above appears even though the AirPrint option is enabled for one or more printers through the iPrint Appliance Management Console.

Resolution

Novell has documented three solutions to overcome the limitations described in this document. Explore each option and decide which is most appropriate for your environment.

  1. Implementing a DNS-SD solution to advertise iPrint printers
  2. Implementing a satellite Avahi listener / responder to advertise iPrint printers
  3. Implementing an Avahi reflector to advertise iPrint printers

Cause

The "Deployment Considerations in iPrint Appliance." section of the iPrint Appliance documentation lists network requirements.  These requirements are:
  • Wireless network with no interconnection (no routers involved, every device on the same 'network')
  • IP Multicast network (IP Multicast must be enabled on network devices such as routers and switches)
Reading further into these requirements means that you must:
  • Have a single subnet network where the iPrint Appliance and wireless clients reside on the same network segment. This requirement may exist in small deployments.  Enabling iPrint Printers for Avahi within the iPrint Appliance Management Console's Printers page will work. However, in an enterprise environment with multiple subnets, this is not possible.
or
  • Enable forwarding of multi-cast frames across routers. This leads to increased traffic across different networks and poor wireless performance.
The solutions listed in this TID do not rely on the above two methods to advertise printers to iOS devices.
