XENBUS: Waiting for device to initialize: 295s...

This document (7014030) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3
XEN

Situation

When a VM is started it hits a 5 minute delay at:

XENBUS:  Waiting for device to initialize: 295s...

If the VM has Open Enterprise Server (OES) installed and running NSS, a corresponding entry in the message file may be:

jstcpd: Jet Stream starting with Connections NoActivity Timeout to be 300 seconds

Resolution

Check the VM configuration to see if there is a virtual CDROM attached with no actual media available at the location specified.  (path to iso image is wrong/unavailable or there is no DVD in the device on the HOST).

Remove the virtual CDROM device from the VM.

Additional Information

If the VM requries access to a DVD or iso image, the .iso file should be copied to the VM or made available some other way.

Never leave a virtual CDROM permanently attached to a VM.
