Adaptec i2o based SCSI controller fails to initialize during SLES11 installation

This document (7003842) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

The installation of SLES11 reports no hard disks could be found. Looking at /var/log/boot.msg, messages similar to the following may be found:

<3>dpti: adpt_config_hba: pci request region failed
<3>Could not Init an I2O RAID device
<3>Will not try to detect others.

Resolution

The installation needs to be started with the following options appended:

BrokenModules=i2o_core,i2o_config,i2o_bus,i2o_proc

This will ensure the module dpt_io2 will be used to support the controller otherwise the system cannot reserve the
requested memory regions as those are already in use by the i2o* modules.

Additional Information

This issue was experienced on aFujitsu Siemens RX300 (first generation) with an Adaptec (formerly DPT) ASR-2010S I2O Zero Channel controller.
