SLES11SP1 running on s390 a disk partition goes read-only after booting

This document (7007914) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

The partition mounted at /opt becomes read-only in a sporadic fashion.  Restart will usually correct the issue, and running fsck will temporarily remedy the situation as well.  The disk is attached to an IBM s390 with the latest kernel, driver, and firmware updates.

Resolution

In the /etc/init.d/boot.local script, someone had put the following command:

blockdev --setro /dev/dasdc
This command causes the disk to become read-only when any attempt to write the the volume in question
is done.

Removing this line allowed the server to run correctly over many subsequent reboots.
