Environment

Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11.3 Appliance Imaging

Situation

Deployed the ZENworks 11.3 virtual appliance
The novell-proxydhcp service is started

PXE booting fails with one of the following errors:

TFTP.....
PXE-E32: TFTP open timeout

PXE-E53: No boot filename received

Resolution

Disable the firewall on the ZENworks Appliance:
  1. Right click the desktop and select: Open in Terminal
  2. Enter the command: yast2
  3. Double click: Services and Security > Firewall
  4. Click: Stop Firewall Now
  5. Click: Disable Firewall Automatic Starting
  6. Click: Next > Finish

Cause

The firewall is started by default on the ZENworks Appliance. This prevents the necessary communication for the PXE process even after the novell-proxydhcp service has been started.

Additional Information

The operating system firewall should not be running when using PXE imaging. Please refer to the following note from TCP and UDP Ports Used by ZENworks Primary Servers :

UDP Port 13331 - "Used by the zmgpreboot policy, but will not work across firewall because it opens random UDP port for each PXE device."
