Situation

In Aug. 2005, The US Congress passed an energy bill that included extending Daylight Saving Time by about a month. Beginning in 2007, DST will start the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday of November. This change will affect customers in the United States and Canada.

Resolution

No action/update specific to the Novell Client for Windows is required.

Additional Information

The Novell Client receives the UTC time from the server. The local time zone rules are then applied to set the correct local time.

While the Novell Client login itself does not contain code that needs to be updated for the UTC-to-time zone translation, the Novell Client depends upon the fact that the Microsoft C runtime library (and thereby in turn, the Windows operating system itself) knows what offset to apply for the configured Windows time zone& when. For Windows updates, visit the Microsoft Daylight Savings Time Help and Support Center, at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/timezone/dst2007.mspx.

At minimum, Windows will need to have the DST 2007 updates for Windows itself, which are currently being offered through Windows Update. If the "TZ" environment variable is also defined (by the local workstation configuration, or through the Novell login script, or by any other means), then separately obtaining and installing the Microsoft KB932590 update for MSVCRT will also be required before the Novell Client will correctly achieve time synchronization with the NetWare server during login.

Note: The UTC time received from the NetWare server could potentially be incorrect if the server is not updated, leading to an incorrect time calculation even on properly updated workstations. See "Daylight Saving Time Adjustment Tool for NetWare Servers" (TID 3397648).
