Opening a PDF document with the Firefox adobe reader plugin returns a black screen

This document (7009833) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

On SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP1 when attempting to open a PDF document using the Adobe Reader plugin for Firefox, the browser window will simply turn solid black or white.  Disabling the Adobe Reader plugin will work around the problem and simply open the document using the Adobe Reader application.

Resolution

The problem is an issue being caused by a previous fix made to Firefox.   The following work around can be used so that PDFs will opened using the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox:

1. Install the nspluginwrapper.rpm (using either YaST Software Management or zypper)
2. Load firefox and type about:config for the url, click "I will be careful"
3. Search for dom.ipc.plugins.enabled
4. Double click that line to change the true value to false.

The PDFs should now open inside of Firefox using the plugin.
