Keynote Topic
What the (*#$(! Is That? Identifying Bizarre Network Issues
Still feeling drowsy after a late evening of troubleshooting the branch office network, you roll out of bed at 5am, replace your "There's No Place Like 127.0.0.1" t-shirt with your "I Read Your Email" t-shirt and reheat the coffee you didn't get to finish the morning before. It's another day of fun and games in the world of IT. What would it be today? An application that hoards processing power because it doesn't understand it's not the only application on the network? A circular printing route caused by a user setting up 'a backup link to the network?' A new OS update that took your network back a few years? Executive management who want to know if TIVO can be set up by the day's end?
In this Keynote presentation, Laura shares some of the more 'interesting' issues seen on corporate networks and what to watch for:
- Digital tourist packets (path issues)
- The slow-boat network (latency)
- Sipping data daintily (throughput issues)
- Taking the low road (asymmetrical QoS)
- Stone-cold coders - or stoned coders? (funky application behavior)
- Pretty, but not too bright (unintelligent intelligent devices)
- Don't look behind the curtain (ancient embedded relics)
Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier

Keynote Topic
Why Community Matters
Novell works closely with the FOSS community in building openSUSE, which ultimately provides the foundation of SUSE Linux Enterprise. As part of the larger open source market, Novell plays a vital role, but also depends on other players -- including competitors! -- for its products. We'll take a look at why this is a better model in the long run, how it helps Novell customers and partners, and where we're focusing in 2010.
