NetWare Virtualization

Virtualization

Today, virtualization is a topic of discussion in the data center because several emerging virtualization technologies have the potential to improve resource utilization, efficiency, scalability and manageability for commodity hardware systems.

Leveraging the Xen virtualization built into the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 platform, Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 offers the ability to run NetWare 6.5 SP7, or a Linux-based Open Enterprise Server, as a paravirtualized guest operating system on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Open Enterprise Server 2 includes a paravirtualized version of NetWare 6.5 (NetWare 6.5 SP7) that is designed to recognize when it is running in a virtualized environment and optimize its performance.

Rely on Enterprise-ready Performance

Xen is the industry’s fastest and most secure infrastructure virtualization software technology. It has been endorsed and adopted by more than 20 of the industry’s most influential vendors, including AMD, Dell, Egenera, HP, IBM, Intel, Mellanox Technologies, Network Appliance, Novell, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Topspin, Unisys and Voltaire. Xen has 10 times less overhead than competitive proprietary offerings. Its unique performance benefits result from its use of paravirtualization, which allows hosted virtual servers to collaborate with the hypervisor to achieve the best performance for enterprise applications.

Virtualization within Novell Open Enterprise Server opens up profitable server consolidation possibilities. On today’s high-end hardware, NetWare rarely comes close to reaching full CPU utilization. With Novell Open Enterprise Server 2, you can take advantage of under-utilized hardware by having a single machine host two, three, or more NetWare servers without affecting performance. By virtualizing a mix of Linux and NetWare on a single physical server, you can realize significant savings on hardware costs, rack space, cooling and power requirements. More +
