We were running out of file cache memory on our 6-node NetWare cluster, and we didn’t have any money for new 64-bit servers and OES 2. Xen virtualization of NetWare allowed us to move certain services off of our larger cluster onto a pair of smaller clusters, on just two
servers. This allowed us to spread the file-serving load across all 6 nodes of the old cluster, and ease our memory problems. This is how we did it.

A handy network diagnostic

On April 13th 2007 Novell released a new Winsock patch for NetWare, wsock6l. In that Readme, was this line:

Technical Support Information:
Included a new module called WS2NRM.NLM which is a replacement for winsock NRM diagnostics. Only needs to be loaded to troubleshoot winsock related issue through NRM.

And didn’t tell anything else about this new thing. I found out about it on a recent support call. What it does is enable a new diagnostic page in the Novell Remote Manager for NetWare to track Winsock2 issues. This is handy!

The File Store in ZENworks Asset Manager (ZAM) is a very key part of the process. The Collection Servers all use the File Store, and all the Client Agents that talk to Collection Servers indirectly rely upon it. Corruption or outright loss of the File Store can have major impacts to the Inventory process as a whole. This article should help you get it back if you find you need to rebuild your File Store.
