The Filr 3.3 release includes the much awaited Filr Linux Desktop Client. The Linux Desktop Client makes working with Filr files in a Linux environment much more seamless.

Earlier to this, the only option available for Linux environment was the Filr web client.

Some of the salient capabilities of Filr Linux Desktop Client are:

– Integration with GNOME Desktop Manager (only)

– Integration with Nautils File Manager

– Context Menu options

– Overlay Icons

– Sync point support

– GUI support

The Linux Desktop Client does not support the “Files on Demand” capability. Instead, it supports adding sync points. Once a sync point is added all the files and folders under the sync point will be downloaded to the Linux Desktop Client. From then onwards, the content under a sync point is available for offline access and is always kept in sync with the latest changes.

The sharing and commenting capabilities are not natively available in this release. However, for every file or folder there is a context menu option present which is “View in a web browser”. On selecting this option, a browser page will directly take the control to the corresponding file or folder. In the web client view, the sharing and commenting actions can be performed.

This client is certified on SLED 12 SP2 Desktop Linux distribution. The plan is to include support for the following distributions in the near future:

– Ubuntu

– Debian

– Open SUSE 42.x

The other important capabilities that work well are:

– AA integration

– Register and Wipe

– Zoning

– File Type Blocking

Looking forward to seeing a good roll out of the Filr Linux Desktop Clients 🙂

  1. Would really like to see the Files on Demand feature brought to Linux. Is that not on the roadmap at all?
