Here, let me drive

December 18, 2008 3:55 pm

You know how as an IT person, you try explaining something to a user, but you are in a hurry to get to the next fire, so you say “Here, let me drive.”? You end up grabbing the keyboard and mouse, do the task the user was asking about, and give a brief explanation as you go. Well, there are so many new display options for folder in GroupWise 8, I could see myself asking the user to “just let me drive” a lot. Now, you don’t even need to leave your desk. With GroupWise 8 you can configure a folder to display things exactly how the user is requesting, and then SEND THEM THE SETTINGS! That’s right, you can get everything set just right, and then send the settings to as many users as you would like.

First, using either an existing folder, or a new one, right click and choose Properties, and then go to the Display tab. Set the folder to the display settings you want, maybe using the new discussion thread view, or some awesome panels you created. Hit OK to apply the display settings to the folder. Now, if the folder looks the way you want it, click on the View menu at the top of the GroupWise window. In that Menu click on Display Settings > Send Current

“This message includes display settings sent by Mike Brady.

To access the display settings right click on the ‘GWDisplaySettings.gws’ attachment and choose Import Display Settings.

Once imported the new display settings are accessible from Properties | Display on any folder.”

So once you’ve imported the display setting, you can go to any folder, and in the Display properties you will now have a menu item in the settings dropdown with the same name as the folder you exported the settings from. So a folder name “Listserv” will appear as “Listserv” in the Settings Name dropdown menu.

I could see myself using this setting a lot as I work with my users on all of the new features in GroupWise 8. Plus, this is not limited to sysadmin types, any user can send any other user display settings.
