Universal Imaging Utility
As you all know, the imaging solution we deliver with ZENworks is great :-), however quit a few customers use the additional tools from ENGL to make life even more easy.

This weekend I saw that there is another imaging add-on, the Universal Imaging Utility, it’s a utility from the people that created Ghost. I had a quick look at the spec’s and saw that the approach they use is some different from what ENGL does. UIU adds a large amount of generic drivers to the base image where ENGL uses a minimal install and add’s the required drivers through the add-on images. The benefit of the last one is the reduced size of the image and the ability to add new drivers if new machines come in without the need to open up the base image.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this Universal Imaging Utility, any ZEN customers using this?

Please be more kind to apostrophes. http://www.apostrophe.fsnet.co.uk/

  2. I’ll give Ron the benefit of the doubt here. Ron (as you can probably tell from previous posts) is from the Netherlands. His English is superb – and I’m sure you will join me in giving him some leniency in the use of apostrophes.

Yeah I seem to be using them too much, it must have to do with my Dutch origin. I have seen Edward (one of the sys-ops) do the same. He lives in New Zealand but is originally Dutch as well.

I’ll forgive you. I just can’t stand to see those poor apostrophes in pain like that. :-)

Interestingly, on the site, there is a ZENworks user profiled that they have posted. Not much by way of technical data, but it seems to make sense.

This product, like ENGL’s costs too much. I like ENGL, but way to hard to justify this in our environment. “Doesn’t ZENworks do imaging already?” is what I would hear.

We’ve built our own universal image w/ the XP sysprep (earlier versions this wasn’t possible easily) and had good (although not perfect) results.

Personally, I’d really like to see this (or a large part of it) integrated into the next version of ZEN imaging.

Trust me, SMS pressure is starting to bother me. We get SMS free with our EA now.

  7. I had the exact same questions from my management.

The business case that I used to purchase ENGL is a little different. Yes, Zenworks does imaging, and so do a number of other products. However, none of them actually help you build your base image, add-on’s and patches. On top of that, it is a supported application and the knowledge is easily transferable to staff. As opposed to the 6 month process I went through trying to custom build an automated setup using MS tools and .vbs scripts. ENGL was well worth the money! FYI – I have never had to wait more than 24 hours for a solution to any problem with their product.
