Microsoft will discontinue all support for its Windows 7 operating system in January 2020. Even today, Windows 7 is in an extended support phase, meaning Microsoft is offering paid support but not the free support included with licenses, and only provides security-related updates. What it means is the clock is ticking for businesses to migrate to Windows 10, with its mobile device support, enhanced security capabilities, and business productivity features.
Statistics vary, but Net Applications reported that, at the end of May, 39 percent of all Windows-based PCs were running Windows 10. Duo Security says enterprise adoption, specifically, is up to 48 percent this year, up from 27 percent last year. While it’s widely believed that a large percentage of enterprises that have not migrated are testing the new OS, based on these data, by January 2020, when Windows will no longer be supporting any of its legacy operating systems, there will still be a sizable based on Windows 7 users (and even some still on XP).
Any major software migration – and Windows 10 is unquestionably a major update – comes with challenges, which have kept many enterprises from making the jump, including data and application migration and support to ensure operational continuity. There’s also the time factor; migrating large numbers of users can be a painstaking process that can take 12-18 months in some cases.
But, the migration is inevitable, from a legacy support and security perspective, as well as from a productivity standpoint, which most IT decision makers recognize. With the right tools, like ZENworks Configuration Management, many of the challenges can be mitigated, leading to a smooth and successful migration without disruption.
The ZENworks Configuration Management platform includes the features and functionality to automate and accelerate Windows 10 migrations. ZENworks Configuration Managementis part of the Micro Focus family of solutions that allows enterprises to not only simplify their Windows migrations, but gives them an integrated platform for managing assets, mobility solutions, security, virtualization, and IT services.
On Wednesday, June 27, Micro Focus will be hosting a Webinardiscussing Windows 10 migration, including a focus on ensuring a smooth migration process with the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and ZENworks. The session will be presented by experienced engineers who are actively engaged with customers in live migrations.
If you haven’t yet started your migration to Windows 10, there’s little time to wait. If you have started but are facing too many challenges, your situation is even more urgent in order to avoid lengthy business disruptions.
