New Beginning – Training Services

Today, I am pleased to post an open letter from my boss, Dave Crowther, the Global Director of Training Services. Take it away Mr. Crowther:

The beginning of each new year is a great time to reflect on your life and set goals to become the type of person you want to be.

This year, I have vowed my goal setting will be different. Rather than setting vague goals of what I want the end result to be, I am setting specific goals that will help me progress to the desired end result. The goals I am setting have a specific completion date and I have enlisted the help of a mentor to make me more accountable for achieving my goals.

I have set goals related to my family, my job, my fitness, and my personal growth. This year, one of my personal growth goals that I have set is about increasing my knowledge. There are many areas of my job (and life) that I can become more proficient at and improve my skills – enabling me to be more productive. I have set goals to become more knowledgeable by taking training classes and studying to gain the knowledge needed to perform at a much higher level.

At the end of the day, it is really about improving performance. Maybe you want to perform at a higher level because you have your eye on a new position that requires increased knowledge and skills. Maybe you want to increase your expertise and capabilities and become more strategic within your existing team. Increased knowledge can help in either area.

That knowledge can be obtained through experience or you can leverage the help of an expert to speed up the process.

What I find most rewarding about being in Training Services is having the opportunity to help you NetIQ, Novell and SUSE system administrators get better at doing your jobs. Your job is complex, so I love the challenge of being a part of the process of your gaining more knowledge to do that job faster and more accurately.

As we create our courses, we know that you have limited time to spend, so we focus on the more important things you need to understand to install, administer and keep those complex enterprise products running without problems. You are the glue that holds those solutions together. The products will not run themselves. They need intelligent administrators–you who understand the products and can handle the complexities of multi-vendor solutions–to fully leverage the feature set to achieve the desired solution.

Our instructors have years of combined experience doing the jobs that you are doing today. They know that good training is more than just teaching you what each feature or product setting does, instead it is understanding the needs of the business and applying the right expertise to fill those needs and having the knowledge and skill to apply the right solution to each problem that exists.

I see the human mind as an amazing and powerful device. It has the unique ability, beyond anything a computer can do, to take the information and experience it gets from one situation or scenario and generalize that knowledge and apply it to a novel situation. Good training, our training, gives you an opportunity to gain that information and experience that becomes real knowledge that you can apply to the new situations you encounter all the time.

Let us help you to obtain more knowledge and expertise, so you can achieve your goals and have a more successful 2013.
