Report Shows BYOD Threat Landscape Growing for Businesses

Is your IT department completely overwhelmed trying to thwart cyberthreats and mitigate BYOD security challenges?

If so, you’re not alone. As the recent IT Security Risks Survey 2014 from Kaspersky Labs shows, an overwhelming 94 percent of businesses experienced cybersecurity issues in 2014. This is a 3 percent increase from 2013.

Furthermore, the amount of targeted attacks, meaning deliberate attempts by unauthorized third parties to bypass security regulations and steal sensitive information, also increased from 9 percent in 2013 to 12 percent in 2014.

The protection of confidential information has, therefore, become a top priority amongst network professionals.

Adding to the challenge of protecting confidential data, however, is the problem of BYOD security. In many organizations, employees use unmanaged mobile devices and apps to access sensitive business or customer data. When employees use unmanaged mobile devices at work and apps, it can compromise the security of the entire organization.

What are some specific BYOD challenges that companies are struggling to overcome? Mobile device theft and leaked information via mobile devices are two problems that are mentioned as the basis for a large number of security incidents across multiple industries. In the real estate industry, for example, lost or stolen devices account for 36 percent of security issues while leaked information accounts for 25 percent.

It’s also important to remember that security incidents do not always arise from external sources, like hackers. They can crop up through employee devices, too—both intentionally and unintentionally. So keeping track of your employees’ mobile activity, meaning the apps they use, the information they share, and the places where they access your core network (like airports, coffee shops and home offices), is mandatory for preventing data breaches.
