Using Mono 2.4 you can now develop and build you applications in Visual Studio or Monodevelop and deploy on SUSE Linux Server. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Mono Extension also allows you to leverage existing ASP.NET 2.0 code regardless of where it was developed. Developers are now free to choose their development platform. There is a tremendous amount of existing content around .NET development; from numerous books to online and class-based training available that can now be easily utilized by teams wishing to migrate their applications to an enterprise grade Linux. I’ve listed a few resource links below that contain a lot of useful .NET related content.
If you develop on Linux, the recently released Monodevelop 2.0 offers a free IDE for building your .NET applications on Linux and supports many of the .NET programming languages . It also features an integrated debugger, a visual designer and a full featured code editor. If you develop on Linux (or any of the other support platforms) go to the Monodevelop website ( http://monodevelop.com/ ) for more information and to download.
Microsoft offers free versions of their Visual Studio development tool at http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/. These versions are missing some of the features of the complete Visual Studio Suite, but do offer much of the power and capability of the full suite. With the Express versions of the IDE you must download the version for the language you use and the abridged version of their MSDN Library. If you are not an MSDN subscriber, the Express versions offer you an opportunity to experience the tools without the expense of the subscription.
ISVs and development teams in businesses and institutions can now experience what .NET has to offer while still realizing the ease of management and cost savings of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
