I know, this blog is supposed to be about Novell and it’s products and not about making jokes. And I know I shouldn’t make jokes about Americans as many of my colleagues are from the US. But let me make an exception once.
One of the nice thing’s about working at Novell is the many different cultures you see around you in such an international organization. I’m working in the European Support Center in the Netherlands and here at the office we’ve got people from many different countries working to support people from all over the world. Today one of my colleagues (she was born in Iran) send me this joke:
A man is taking a walk in Central park in New York. Suddenly he sees a little girl being attacked by a pit bull dog .
He runs over and starts fighting with the dog. He succeeds in killing the dog and saving the girl’s life.
A policeman who was watching the scene walks over and says:
“You are a hero, tomorrow you can read it in all the newspapers: ‘Brave New Yorker saves the life of little girl”
The man says: “But I am not a New Yorker!”
The policeman answers:
“Oh ,then it will say in newspapers in the morning: ‘Brave American saves life of little girl'”
“But I am not an American!” says the man.
“Oh, what are you then? ”
The man says: “I am an Iranian!”
The next day the newspapers says:
“Islamic extremist kills innocent American dog “
It’s great to see this type of jokes coming by (as long as my colleague from Belgium doesn’t start to make jokes about Dutch people saving money).
It is interesting to see the topic behind the joke, the way thing’s get positioned in the media do have a lot of affect on how people think about certain topics. I try to follow some of the news about Novell and it has been interesting to see how some of the articles about Novell have been written, especially the news around the Novell – MS deal has been interesting to look at. Some articles spoke about the evil Novell while others had a more neutral look at what happened.
One other interesting aspect on this is looking at the topics that people write about, somehow as soon as soon as Novell gets mentioned in an article it’s often “Novell the Linux company that got in the news due to it’s contract with Microsoft” while Novell does much more then just Linux. As a ZENworks guy I sure have a special interest in the news around ZENworks, it will be interesting to see what will get published in the Media about our ZENworks Configuration Management product in the next few months.
Greetings from the Netherlands
