There’s a convergence upon us between social and enterprise collaboration and the applications we use and what once was but a trickle is now a tidal wave. While there are no doubt countless benefits to this convergence – the price of this integrated world is in a word – security. Privacy to be more specific – or the lack thereof whether intentional or not.
You don’t have to search too hard for evidence of this. Whether it’s this weeks latest on Facebook privacy breaches or recent stories about Twitter being hacked, there’s plenty for every CIO and CEO to worry about when it comes to the security of their IT infrastructure or more importantly the privacy of your customers, partners and employees.
The solution isn’t ignoring this convergence or naively assuming you can prevent it. It’s too late for that and it wouldn’t work anyway. A Novell colleague, Dipto Chakravarty, smartly wrote about this issue recently (and correctly predicted Facebook was next) and offered some practical and prescriptive advice. Dipto rightly suggested that good intentions aren’t enough. When bad things happen to your network, infrastructure or privacy “It’s not your computer anymore.”
Fortunately there are solutions that allow enterprises to implement reliable cloud security services that allow for the benefits of personal and enterprise collaboration. And intelligent security solutions do this in a way that address these needs across physical, virtual and cloud infrastructures.
“The dog ate my homework” didn’t work in high school and “I thought my privacy was protected” doesn’t work now. As they say, hope is not a strategy. The good news is intelligent solutions are.
