Concepts

This documentation describes Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS), its functions, and features---including gateways.

Gateways allow NDPS clients to send jobs to printers that are not NDPS-aware (or not equipped with embedded NDPS printer agents). A gateway is an NetWare NLM that runs on a file server and communicates with the print service manager (NDPSM.NLM) running on the same file server. You select and configure a printer gateway when you create a new printer agent.

A gateway is also the print data and information conduit to and from the physical printer. In addition, the gateway translates information from the printer's Page Description Language (PDL) to the Document Printing Architecture (DPA) flavor used and stored in the Managed Object Database (MOD). See ISO Standard 10175-1 for information about DPA.
