Resource Record Management

An RRSet object represents an individual domain name within a DNS zone. Each RRSet object has one or more resource records beneath it containing additional information about the domain.

The most common resource records are Address (A) records, which map a domain name to an IP address, and Pointer (PTR) records, which map an IP address to a domain name within an IN-ADDR.ARPA zone.

The Resource Record Management role consists of the following tasks:

Creating Resource Records

A resource record is a piece of information about a domain name. Each resource record contains information about a particular piece of data within the domain.

To create a new resource record, complete the following steps:

  1. Click DNS Management > Resource Record Management to open the Resource Record Management window in the main panel.

  2. Select Create Resource Record from the drop-down menu and click OK to open the Create Resource Record window.

  3. Select the domain where the resource record is to be created. This causes the Object Locator icon to appear next to the Select Host Name field.

To bind the domain with a host name, go to Step 4. Otherwise, go to Step 5.

  4. Type the host name you wish to bind the domain to or click the Object Locator icon to search for a host name.

  5. Click OK to specify the Resource Record type.

  6. Choose the Resource Record Type (RR Type) from the available options under the Others drop-down menu and enter appropriate Resource Record data corresponding to the type chosen.

  7. Click Create.

For more information on Resource Record Types, see Table , Resource Record Types and Field Differences .

NOTE:  Start of Authority (SOA) is defined as part of a Zone object's attributes. A Pointer (PTR) record is created automatically when any new A resource record or IPv6 (AAAA) resource record is created if the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone exists.

Viewing or Modifying Resource Records

To modify a resource record, complete the following steps:

  1. Click DNS Management > Resource Record Management to open the Resource Record Management window in the main panel.

  2. Select View/Modify Resource Record from the drop-down menu and click OK to open the View/Modify RRSet - Resource Record window.

  3. From the Select Domain drop-down menu, select the domain that contains the host or RRSet.

  4. Enter or search to select the values for the following fields: Host Name, Resource Record, and Resource Record Type.

To use the search feature to select these values, do the following:

  5. Click Next to modify the resource record data.

You can now modify the Resource Record Data for all but the following types of Resource Records:

    - A (or IPv4)
    - AAAA (or IPv6)
    - PTR

  6. Click Done to save the changes.

Deleting Resource Records

You can delete one, more than one, or all resource records and RRSets, using the multi-select deletion feature in the DNS/DHCP Management Utility.

  1. Click DNS Management > Resource Record Management to open the Resource Record Management window in the main panel.

  2. Select Delete Resource Record from the drop-down menu and click OK to open the Delete RRSet - Resource Record window.
