Microsoft Media Player, Internet Explorer, and SSL

Most media players cannot directly retrieve media objects using an SSL connection. However, a browser can download the media files using SSL and then hand the files to the media players.

This is an SSL variation of HTTP streaming, and it works in most situations, including when a Netscape browser hands the media files to Media Player.

It will not work, however, when Internet Explorer and Media Player are both involved.

When Internet Explorer receives a request for a media file type that is associated with Media Player, it immediately launches Media Player and passes along the file download information.

Unfortunately, since Media Player can't retrieve media objects through an SSL connection, the file download fails.

If you need to use Internet Explorer, you can work around this problem by associating media object file types with another media player.

Alternatively, you can access media files and play them with Media Player by using a Netscape browser.
