Product Description

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2015 (OES 2015) is the most trusted, secure and highly available suite of enterprise ready services that provides file, print, networking and application services built on the SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP3.

OES 2015 provides:

  • Native support for Microsoft Active Directory
Active Directory users can natively access the NSS resources using a CIFS client. This is achieved by
    • Joining the OES 2015 server to an Active Directory domain.
    • Upgrading the NSS pool media format and AD-enabling the volumes.
    • Assigning AD users and groups as trustees on the NSS resources.
    • Accessing NSS resources as AD users from the clients that are already joined to the AD domain.

  • DFS, DST, SMS, and Auditing are supported for AD users
  • SMB v2 (SMB 2.002) support
    • Reduced network traffic: Achieved through using a lower number of verbs (19 verbs in SMB v2 v/s 100+ in SMB v1).
    • Performance improvement: SMB v2 (SMB 2.002) is more robust and is designed to perform better in high speed network environments.
    • Increased security: Achieved through using Kerberos for Active Directory, NLTMSSP for eDirectory user authentication, and HMAC-SHA256 for SMB signing.

  • Large storage support
    • A new pool type (NSS64) is introduced to allow a pool to grow up to 8 Exabytes (EB). All pools prior to OES 2015 are of type NSS32 and support only up to 8 TB.
    • OES 2015 supports both NSS32 and NSS64 pools, and they can co-exist.
    • The NCP protocol has been extended to support volumes larger than 16 TB.

  • The Distributed File Services plug-in for iManager has been enhanced to manage junctions and also to export list of junctions to a .csv file.

For services planning help, see the following sections in the OES 2015: Planning and Implementation Guide:

NOTE: Beginning with OES 2015, Archive and Version Services (AV) and QuickFinder services are not included. New installations of OES 2015 will not include patterns to install these components. If you are upgrading to OES 2015 from an earlier OES server (one that includes these packages), the AV and QuickFinder packages and the associated data will not be accessible on the OES 2015 server. However, the iManager plug-ins for AV and QuickFinder are still available in the OES 2015 package but not installed by default. You can install these plug-ins from iManager to manage servers prior to OES 2015.
