Novell NetWare Server Consolidation Utility 2.6 Readme July, 2004 **************IMPORTANT*************** If you have compressed files and you are planning to use the NetWare Migration Wizard 7.1 or NetWare Server Consolidation Utility 2.6 to copy these files to an NSS volume on a server running NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1, you must first apply the NSS patch included in the n65comn1.exe file or apply NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1.1 or later. This patch fixes an issue with the compression code in the NSS file system that causes compressed files to become corrupted when copied to a NetWare 6.5 SP1 server via the SMS APIs. FAILURE TO APPLY THIS PATCH WILL RESULT IN DATA LOSS DURING THE MIGRATION! The NSS patch is necessary only if you are migrating compressed data to a NetWare 6.5 SP1 NSS Compressed volume. It is not needed for any other version of NetWare, including the shipping version of NetWare 6.5. For additional information and to obtain the patch, see TID #2967857 in the Novell Knowledgebase at http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp. You can find NetWare 6.5 Support Packs on the Novell Product Updates page at http://support.novell.com. ************************************** 1.0 Overview 2.0 Known Issues 3.0 Legal Information ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 Overview ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Novell NetWare Server Consolidation Utility helps you consolidate data from several servers onto a single server, so you have fewer servers to manage. For information on installing and running the Server Consolidation Utility, go to http://www.novell.com/documentation/servercon26. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 Known Issues ---------------------------------------------------------------- Use Latest Support Packs ---------------------------------------------------------------- It is highly recommended that you update to the latest support packs on both the source and destination servers. Database Can't Be Created Errors on NT 4.0 Workstations ---------------------------------------------------------------- If you see a "Database Project Can't Be Created" error when running the Server Consolidation Utility on a Windows NT 4.0 workstation, you must install the Microsoft Jet Database drivers. To acquire the Jet Database drivers, search the download.microsoft.com Web site for the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 3 Update. Copies Incomplete Data Files ---------------------------------------------------------------- Files copied to the destination server may have any of the following characteristics: -Destination is a 0-byte file. -Creation time and date are incorrect when compared to the source server. -Modification time and date are incorrect when compared to the source server. -File was not completely copied. This is indicated by the destination file being smaller in size than the source file. To correct these issues, always use the latest TSA500 and SMDR on the source server if it is a NetWare 5 server, or the latest TSA600 and SMDR on the source server if it is a NetWare 6 server. For more information, see TID #10076801 in the Knowledgebase at http://support.novell.com. Copying data from NetWare 4.2 Servers ---------------------------------------------------------------- If critical errors occur during the verification process, load CLIBAUX.NLM on the NetWare 4.2 destination server. Then retry the verification process. Unloading NUWAGENT.NLM on an Nterprise Branch Office Appliance ----------------------------------------------------------------- When running the Server Consolidation Utility in conjunction with an Nterprise Branch Office appliance, if an error state occurs and you are asked to unload the NUWAGENT.NLM, the system may not allow you to unload the NLM. If this is the case, perform a reboot of the Nterprise Branch Office appliance. IPX or SCMD must be enabled when consolidating from NetWare 4x ----------------------------------------------------------------- In order to perform a server consolidation when the source server is running NetWare 4x, IPX or SCMD must be enabled on the Novell client. Additionally, IPX must be bound on the destination server when running a consolidation from a NetWare 4x source server. Consolidating Data to SYS: on an Nterprise Branch Office Appliance ------------------------------------------------------------------ Anytime that an Nterprise Branch Office appliance is rebooted, the SYS: volume is recreated on the appliance. Because of this, the Server Consolidation Utility will not display the SYS: volume on Nterprise Branch Office appliance machines. Application hangs when selecting source and destination trees ------------------------------------------------------------------ When running the Server Consolidation Utility on a Windows 2000 workstation, the application may hang when selecting the source and destination trees for the consolidation project. Installing Windows 2000's Service Pack 2 or later corrects this issue. Consolidating servers over IPX (4.x server, etc.) ----------------------------------------------------------------- If copying information from a NetWare 4x IPX-based server, and the Error Resolution dialog box displays errors stating an error occured opening the file, or file xxx was invalid (volume invalid), or you are unable to expand the source volume and see a list of files, then IPX connection issues exist. To work around this, ensure there is a dual stack IP/IPX client that is installed on the workstation running the consolidation, and that there is a mapped drive to both the source IPX server and the destination server before running the Server Consolidation Utility. Avoid Extended Character Passwords ------------------------------------------------------------------ We recommend not using an Admin user with an extended character password to perform the consolidation using the Server Consolidation Utility. Re-installing the Server Consolidation Utility in Another Language ------------------------------------------------------------------ To re-install the Server Consolidation Utility in a different language than it was originally installed in, you must first uninstall the utility in the first language, then re-install it using the new language. The Compare Feature Shows Attributes Are Different ------------------------------------------------------------------ When a Read-only file is copied with the Novell Client, the Rename Inhibit (RI) and Delete Inhibit (DI) attributes should be automatically set, but, the latest version of the Novell Client (4.90) does not set the RI or DI attributes. This is an issue with the latest client. The Server Consolidation Utility, as expected, does set the RI and DI attributes when copying a Read-only file. However, if you choose to have the Server Consolidation Utility perform a file compare between the source and destination files after the consolidation completes, the log file will show that the source and destination attributes are different. This is because the source file is marked Read-only and the RI and DI attributes are not set, but the files on the destination server had the RI and DI attributes set by the Server Consolidation utility. While the Novell Client does not properly set the RI and DI attributes at this time, the Server Consolidation and NetWare Copy utilities do. To access the NetWare Copy utility, right click on the red N in the system tray of your workstation, then select NetWare Utilities > NetWare Copy. Installation Quits After Extracting ------------------------------------------------------------------- There are some known issues with Java and certain video cards that cause the Server Consolidation Utility installation to quit after extracting. If you encounter this issue, update your graphic card drivers to the latest version, or disable the hardware acceleration for your graphics card. Last Accessed Date Errors in the Log File -------------------------------------------------------------------- When you choose to have the Server Consolidation Utility perform a file compare after the copy process completes, it might report "Last Accessed Date" errors in the log file. For example, if the source file has a Last Accessed Date of June 10, 2003, and that file is copied to a destination server on June 15, 2003, the file on the destination server retains the source file's Last Accessed Date of June 10, 2003. However, the source file's date is changed, after the copy completes, to June 15, 2003. This is caused by SMS accessing the source file when it backs up the file during the consolidation process. When the Server Consolidation Utility proceeds to compare the file attributes, it flags an error because the Last Accessed Date has changed on the source. The destination file is correct, only the source file's attribute is changed. This issue can also occurs with the destination file's attribute. This occurs on all files, traditional and compressed, copied from NetWare 4x or 5.0 source servers. It also occurs on fully patched NetWare 5.1 and 6.0 source servers, but only with compressed files, not traditional files. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 Legal Information -------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer, Patents, Copyright, and Export Notice Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
