SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 SP4 is a fully supported real-time operating system extension, specifically engineered to reduce the latency, increase the predictability and increase the reliability of time-sensitive, mission-critical applications. It is designed to work with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 and SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 11 SP4.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension 11 SP4 provides a complete set of essential features for:

  • Kernel Pre-emption: fast response to external events, optimized kernel sections
  • CPU Shielding: dedicated resources such as CPUs and memory for high priority processes
  • Priority Inheritance: raised priority in case of lock contention
  • Interrupt Threads: combine interrupts into threads, which can be prioritized and assigned to specific CPUs
  • High Resolution Timers: improved accuracy for better process accounting and synchronization

SUSE Linux* Enterprise Real Time Extension (SLE RT) is available for download as two ISO images. Media 1 contains the binary packages, media 2 the source code.

Adding the SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension

You can add the Real Time Extension 11 SP4 to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4 as an add-on product at install time or later.

Adding SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension During Installation

To add the RT extension while installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4, select the "Include Add-On Products from Separate Media" box on the Installation Mode Screen. Depending on your installation, you can add the RT Extension from media 1 or from a remote installation source, such as an FTP server, on the next screen.

Adding the SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Extension After Installation

To add the RT extension after you have already installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, start YaST2. Go to Software - Add-On Products add media 1 of the RT extension or a remote installation source. You can then either manually select the specific packages you want to install, or choose from the predefined patterns under the Install and Remove Software option. If you don't find a specific package that you need in any of the suggested usage patterns, try the package search. Some packages might not be included in a pattern.

You can then select the predefined RT pattern to automatically select the recommended packages for the RT extension, or manually choose a different list.
