SUSE Studio 1.2

SUSE Studio 1.2 is available in two editions – SUSE Studio Standard Edition 1.2, which targets ISVs and partners and is part of the SUSE Appliance Program; and SUSE Studio Advanced Edition 1.2, which targets enterprise customers.

SUSE Studio Standard Edition 1.2 contains a core engine called SUSE Studio Onsite 1.2, as well as components like SUSE Lifecycle Management Server 1.2, WebYaST 1.2 and kiwi support. SUSE Studio Advanced Edition 1.2 contains all four components of SUSE Studio Standard Edition 1.2 and additionally brings support for appliances for IBM System z.

SUSE Studio Onsite 1.2

SUSE Studio Onsite is the core engine of SUSE Studio Standard Edition and SUSE Studio Advanced Edition. SUSE Studio Onsite provides the same configuration, easy to use interface and integrated testing features that made SUSE Studio Online popular, but will provide them on a server hosted within the data center. It provides a level of security that enables software partners and enterprises to comfortably control the complete build process of application images or appliances.

SUSE Studio Onsite allows users to create a customized, distributable version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with just a few mouse clicks.

SUSE Lifecycle Management Server 1.2

SUSE Lifecycle Management Server is a tool to manage entitlements and deliver unified software updates for application images or software appliances built on SLE 11 products. It works in concert with SUSE Studio (or SUSE Studio Onsite) to provide updates for SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 based application images or appliances created by SUSE Studio. By providing integrated lifecycle management for software updates, it streamlines the process of addressing security issues and other problems for deployed applications.

The SUSE Lifecycle Management Server ships with an intuitive Web-based interface allowing the customer to manage the application image or appliance update repositories and entitlements easily, in a friendly environment. For the more advanced users, command line utilities are included as well. For customers, SUSE Lifecycle Management Server offers a simple customer center for for subscription overview.

Installing the SUSE Lifecycle Management Server is optional, and although the capability to apply maintenance updates and track entitlements are part of the SLE 11 base, SUSE Lifecycle Management Server smooths the interaction with SUSE Studio and deployed application solutions.

The SUSE Lifecycle Management Server is fully supported, and available as a download to ISVs and customers with an active SUSE Studio subscription. It is packaged as a ready-to-deploy appliance or an add-on product to be installed on a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 server.

WebYaST 1.2

WebYaST is a friendly, standardized web interface to configure an application image or appliance's black-box environment and to perform those maintenance tasks that cannot be automated.

It provides control of a subset of YaST configuration modules appropriate to enable minimal user control of the appliance environment. A collection of WebYaST modules is made available as part of SUSE Studio. WebYaST supports ISVs or IHVs to package a application solutions with a self-contained web-based configuration interface.

It includes a manual describing the configuration options for application vendors and an end-user manual describing the functionality. Vendors are expected to pick-and-choose among the configuration modules we make available, and not necessarily ship the whole set.

SUSE Studio Extension for System z 1.2

SUSE Studio Extension for System z is a component of SUSE Studio and supports building and testing of images for IBM System z. Supported formats are DASD and ZFCp. It is distributed as an add-on product to be installed on top of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1.
