20.0 Installing Only the Desktop Management Server on a Linux Server

The information in this section includes a procedure for installing the Novell® ZENworks® Desktop Management Server on a SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10, Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES Linux) server 1.0, or Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES Linux) 2.0.

For information about the server platform combinations (Middle Tier Server and ZENworks Management Server) that have been tested, see Section 8.0, Platform Support for the Desktop Management Infrastructure. For information about the hardware and software prerequisites for the Linux installation, see Section 3.0, Prerequisites for Installing the ZENworks Desktop Management Server and Section 5.0, Prerequisites for Installing the ZENworks Middle Tier Server.

Use the following steps to install only the ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Server on the Linux server:

  1. From the terminal console, use the su command to switch to the root user.

  2. Run mount /CD_mount_point to mount the ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Installation CD.

  3. Change to the CD mount directory, and run ./setup to display the first screen of the installation program.

  6. On the Tree Information screen, enter the name of the local host (that is, this server's) tree where you want to configure ZENworks. This field is not case sensitive.

  7. Enter the eDirectory distinguished name (DN) for the Administrative User. This field is not case sensitive.

  8. Enter the password for the Administrative User. This field is not case sensitive.

    After your credentials are validated, the ZENworks License Key screen is displayed.

  9. Enter the license code that you received in an e-mail from Novell after you purchased Novell ZENworks. You are periodically reminded to license the product until you provide this license code. If you don't enter an appropriate code, ZENworks Desktop Management functions for only 90 days.

  10. (Optional) The Inventory Standalone Configuration screen is displayed if you choose to install the Inventory Server and the Inventory Database on the same server. If you want the installation program to automatically create the Server Package and the Database Location policy within the Server Package, and to start the Inventory Service on the server, configure the settings on the Inventory Standalone Configuration screen.

    Enter Y to select Inventory Standalone configuration.

  12. Enter the port number you want to designate as one to allow XMLRPC requests pass through to the Inventory Proxy service.

    If you want to change the Port 65000 default, specify a value between 0 and 65535. Ensure that the port number is not used by other services on the server.

  13. (Optional) If you want ZENworks 7 Inventory server to establish a secure connection with eDirectory using LDAP, enter Y, then enter the complete path and the filename of the SSL certificate.

  14. (Conditional). The NetBIOS Configuration screen is displayed only if the NetBIOS name is not present in /etc/samba/smb.conf, and the Linux server name on which you run the ZENworks installation is more than 13 characters.

    If the NetBIOS name is not present in /etc/samba/smb.conf and the Linux server name is more than 13 characters, then the installation program generates a NetBIOS name using the first 13 characters of the Linux server name on which you run the installation. This name is displayed as the default value during the ZENworks Linux installation.

    When the installation process is complete, InstallAnywhere creates an installation log file. Press Ctrl+C to abort the creation of the log file. If the installation is successful, the View Readme screen is displayed.

    Although the Installation Complete message states that all installed ZENworks services have been started, the proxydhcp service is not started after the installation is completed, nor is it started after a reboot. To start the service, run /etc/init.d/novell-proxydhcp start. If you want the service to be started after a reboot, you can use a runlevel editor and add the daemon to the required runlevel. For more information, see Section L.0, Configuring Desktop Management Services for Startup on a Linux Server.

  19. Press Enter to exit the installation program.

IMPORTANT:When you complete the installation of the Desktop Management Server, make sure you complete the post-installation tasks that are required for Windows, NetWare®, and Linux servers. For more information, see Section V, Post-Installation.
