Funny Little Men Behind the Curtain:
- Okay, we really suck at getting shirts out lately. This is entirely Ted’s fault. As your dedicated writer of the “funny little men” section of this podcast, I advise you to send flaming hot emails to Ted. He deserves it.
New feed? I think the link to the right still points to the old feed and it does not show this episode. What is the new feed address (to insert in Amarok)?
Making is easier to populate the GroupWise address book would be really nice to. The fields in the Groupwise Address book should be as easy to populate as a personal address book.

The links in the upper right corner of the NOA home page are correct. They are:

41 minutes and nothing about the linux edition of GMS! Can we get an update on this. Back in June we kept hearing “in a few months” but it’s been pretty quite. A linux edition of GMS is essential for us. Any news on this would be great.
Phil:
Would you want that a personal update, meaning on a per-user basis, or would you want that on a system-wide basis and only for administrators.
I’m not saying that I’ll make it happen (because few people ever heed my advice), but I can always direct them to your comment.

Hey guys,
How long have we had cell phones now? …and why in the world can I STILL not be able to go into ConsoleOne and see where that is part of a user’s ID?!? To my knowledge, the only way I can get GW702’s System Address Book populated with my user’s cell phone information is by creating a new eDir attribute, say “Cell Phone”, by extending the schema, then assigning it to the user class, then going into each user object and adding the new attribute through the “Other” tab, and typing it in.
Then, I go to GW’s Admin-Defined fields and pick that attribute to be assigned to the GW Address Book.
Ridiculous.
How long has Exchange been able to do this natively? Since version 1? Do you know how stupid it makes me look to recommend a product to management that can’t even natively hold a stinkin’ cell phone number in its System Address Book?!?
To say that Novell is losing the war with MSoft because of pitiful marketing is only HALF true; the other side of the coin is that most of Novell’s products continue to have great concepts, great flexibility, excellent engineering– but absolutely “the pits” concerning user experience… and I mean “Administrator” user experience in this case, not so much end-user. I’ve got a gazillion better things I could be doing instead of wading through TIDs and experimenting about what I can’t believe I’m reading. C’mon, guys- get with the program; make things easier for me!
Yes, I’m exasperated… especially when I KNOW it should take a relative minimal amount of coding to make me happy. Yes, I understand you have to test for ramifications with your partner’s products- but there’s just gotta be a way to make things easier, especially for a company that prides itself on its eDir “data vault”; use that know-how to get your own products meeting current needs…
Oh, well. Another day wasted. You guys have a nice one… I’m out of steam now; thanks for listening… You’ll probably respond with an answer of how to do make it happen in 1 easy step, and I’ll feel like an idiot… ah, such is life…
-Stan
I agree, I am facing the same thing. Our VP has demanded to have Cell Phone numbers in the system address book and it’s just a PITA to get it to work. Why is it not there?
Guess Novell is trying to push us away from GroupWise. 🙁
Joe
You’ve mentioned me in the show about the voting. But it’s not a problem of multiple votes, but votes on any but the last show.
Ted, I think you mentioned your Blackberry Pearl in this episode. Do you have trouble syncing it with SLE? I’ve been considering getting one. I cannot get my PocketPC device to sync worth a damn.
Shawn
This may be the very best Open Audio Epsiode thus far. I plan to share bits and pieces at our NUGI extravaganza on January 19th! GREAT WORK! -Norm O’Neal
Shawn:
Well, the BlackBerry is a different beast. It absolutely does not work with Linux. Starting with simply connecting to USB to get a charge, it does not work. My ThinkPad has a seldom-used Windows partition that I used to set up the device when I got it. From there, I synch through the mobile company, so unless I need to back it up, it never connects to my computer.
–Ted
I used to have a Windows (can’t remember if it was 2k or xp) Virtual machine and it could see through the Ubuntu host to the BB. I could then use the BB as a modem to BM vpn into the office while the BB charged.

There was supposed to be sequoia (GW7?), aspen, then cedar….

Where does Bonsai fit into this?
I agree that, if given permission, you should be able to update the GroupWise distribution lists just as easily as you can your personal distribution lists. Along with this is is the inablility to add external users to these system-wide address lists. The way it is now, unless I’m wrong here, you have to create a fake external domain, post office, and account before adding external users to a GroupWise address list. The only way this works is to get the GW administrator to set it up and maintain. Updating this functionality would be a HUGE improvement!
Sanders:
I understand that Mike the Audio Guy is working with you to address this. Thanks for helping us troubleshoot the issue.
–Ted
Great info on the up and coming features, but as usual no info on GMS/Document Management, which always seems to be left behind (and has been for a number of years)
Ted, Please! can you get these guys back and ask them what the strategy is going to be on Documents within GW.
Chris
Well what’s in the name:)
Bonsai is put in on the roadmap between GW7 and Aspen and will contain ‘unfinished business’. See it as Bonsai, a small tree, so small but essential changes to GroupWise. Then later Aspen, a big tree, so big(er) enhancements to GroupWise…
Will the next Groupwise support Netware as server platform?
