Novell's GroupWise WebAccess Offers Corporate Intranet Solution

GroupWise WebAccess Provides Single Point of Collaboration Over the Internet

SYDNEY, Australia -- July 10, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of GroupWise WebAccess, a unique intranet solution that gives GroupWise users anytime, anyplace access to their Universal In Box via the Internet and any HTML 1.0-compliant Web browser. GroupWise WebAccess is the only product on the market that gives users a single interface from which they can send and retrieve E-mail, voice mail, facsimiles, calendar items, appointments and tasks over the Internet. The product is available for GroupWise 4.1 users now and will be available for GroupWise 5 users by the end of this year.

"The Internet provides an ideal environment for distributing information, but cannot be fully leveraged as a collaborative communication tool," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager of Novell's GroupWare Division. "Together, GroupWise and GroupWise WebAccess provide the necessary link between corporate networks and the Internet, keeping people connected and enabling them to communicate and share information from anywhere in the world. As the first and only product that provides a single interface for true collaborative computing over the Internet, GroupWise WebAccess helps people work smarter and companies operate more efficiently."

With GroupWise WebAccess, GroupWise users who spend much of their workday on the Internet can stay connected to the corporate network, participate in and track the status of work processes and manage their schedules without ever leaving their Web browser.

"Smithsonian researchers often visit colleagues at museums and universities and need to be able to access their mail, schedule appointments and share ideas with other associates when they travel," said Leonard Hirsch, chair of the Smithsonian Institution Groupware Communications Committee. "Because GroupWise WebAccess is easy to administer from a systems management perspective and allows the use of any Internet browser, it will help the Smithsonian Institution be more cost-effective and efficient in providing remote E-mail and calendaring access for users."

The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City supports more than 5,000 GroupWise users who take advantage of scheduling and writing E-mail from both remote locations and on campus.

"GroupWise WebAccess solves a lot of problems for us by cutting down on support requirements and allowing us to manage the GroupWise remote-access administration from one central location," said Charles Zurercher, KUMC network specialist. "Our users are impressed with the complete functionality included in GroupWise WebAccess through the HTML interface. They also can use the product easily without needing to connect to servers or knowing any specific network information, which has greatly reduced our training requirements."

By adding GroupWise WebAccess to GroupWise, Novell brings the open technologies and standards of the Internet to the corporate network.

"GroupWise and the Internet complement one another," Nelson said. "As an intranet solution, GroupWise provides the structure to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity from the network, while leveraging the resources and bandwidth available on the Internet."

GroupWise WebAccess is available in 18 different languages and currently supports most popular operating systems and hardware platforms, including NetWare, UNIX and OS/2 (future releases will support Windows NT). GroupWise WebAccess can also coexist on the same machine with the NetWare Web Server and the GroupWise message server, which can reduce hardware costs while improving integration. Like GroupWise 4.1, pricing for GroupWise WebAccess is based on a per-user model. For example, the suggested retail price for GroupWise WebAccess for a five-user pack is $75; a 25-user pack, $360; and a 100-user pack, $1,380.
