Environment

Contextless Login
Novell Client 4.9 for Windows NT/2000/XP
Novell eDirectory
Novell NetWare 6.5

Situation

LDAP Contextless Login

Resolution

ISoftware requirements:

1) Client 4.9 or greater running on the workstations.

2) eDirectory 8.5 or later. (eDirectory 8.5. and 8.6 have reached their "end of life-cycle for support". It is recommended to install eDirectory 8.7.3 into your tree and on every server in your tree where possible. The benefits of eDirectory 8.7.3 greatly outweigh the benefits of all eDirectory and NDS version.)

Known Issues

1) In some instances, the 4.9 client will fail to find a user due to the type of ldap search filter created. This can be easily rectified by either changing the attributes that the client is searching for or by updating the trustee assignments. See TID #10085685 - LDAP Search not returning any entries for some filters that 'OR' search components for details.

VNotes regarding other contextless login solutions

1) Catalog Services is not a supported service running on eDirectory or NDS 8.xx. It is recommended that customer's use the 4.9 Client. It is only necessary to have one eDirectory server in the tree as the LDAP server.

2) There is an unsupported Cool Solution that documents how to setup LDAP Contextless login for client versions prior to 4.9.
