goal

How to identify IP networks in a login script

fact

Novell Client 3.0 for Windows 95/98

Novell Client 3.1 SP1 for Windows 95/98

Novell Client 3.1 for Windows 95/98

Novell Client 3.2 for Windows 95/98

Novell Client 2.5 for Windows 95/98

Novell NetWare 4.11

Novell NetWare 5.1

Novell NetWare 5.0

Formerly TID 2952468

symptom

NETWORK_ADDRESS not working correctly with IP.

Cannot restrict network address in an IP only environment.

NETWORK_ADDRESS variable returns the IP address of workstation (in hex)

note

In NetWare 4.11 environment, a login scripts can include a command to look for what network the user is currently on (i.e. If NETWORK_ADDRESS="189D2700" Then...). In a NetWare 5 IP-only environment, the NETWORK_ADDRESS variable returns the IP address of workstation (in hex).

fix

Enable the line to look for a NETWORK_ADDRESS > [greater than] the first IP address in the range on the segment and < [less than] the last IP address in the range on the segment. For example, if you put into the If...Then statement:

    IF NETWORK_ADDRESS = "189D2700" OR (NETWORK_ADDRESS > "0A033F00" AND NETWORK_ADDRESS < "0A033FFE") THEN <map drives, for example>

This way, the clients that don't support IP yet (i.e.Client32 2.2) will see the IPX segment (189D2700), and the new clients that support IP (i.e. Client32 3.1) will see the IP segment - any DHCP assigned address between "0A033F00" (10.3.63.0) and "0A033FFE" (10.3.63.254).

Please note that the NETWORK_ADDRESS variable returns the complete IP number of the workstation in HEX. The variable does not use the Subnet of the workstation and cannot return the IP Network number of the workstation.
