Installing NDPS Printers on Windows XP/2000

Standard User cannot install printer

Novell Client for Windows XP/2000

When a standard user tries to connect to a NetWare printer using the 'Add Printer wizard', they get the message

"You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer."

This is expected and happens on Queue based printers as well as NDPS Printers.

However, on Windows XP, this does not happen when connecting to a Microsoft based printer. It appears that Microsoft does now allow any user to install any printer. However, Microsoft's Documentation about Windows XP/2000 mention that you have to be Administrator or Power User in order to install a Printer.

This will not work for NDPS printers and never has. NDPS does not support printer connections (printers installed just for the current user.). Queue based printers work but you must associate a windows 2000 driver with the printer through Point and Print.

Workaround:  Some customers have found if they grant full rights to the NDPS directory on the local workstation then the users are able to install the printer.
