Bonded interface not functioning when network starts

Set up bonding on SLES8

SLES8 doesn't enslave devices based on MASTER/SLAVE parameters in configuration files when the network starts. The network interfaces must be enslaved manually to the bond interface using ifenslave.

The slave devices can be enslaved at network startup through the use of a script that runs when the bond interface is brought up. To create the script, do the following (the following example assumes a single bond interface bond0 and two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1):

1. cd to /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts

2. Create a script file called bondup with the following contents:

#! /bin/sh

ifenslave bond0 eth0

ifenslave bond0 eth1

3. Make bondup executable (i.e. chmod 755 bondup)

4. Open /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-bond0 in a text editor and add the following:

5. Run rcnetwork restart

After the bond interface is brought up, the bondup script will run and enslave the ethernet devices.
