Disappearing Roaming Profiles w/ NT Client

(Last modified: 08Jul1998)

This document (2939925) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

When updating from the IntranetWare Client for Windows NT 4.11a using the ACU process found in Workstation Manager 1.0 user's profiles were disappearing. The NT configuration object was configured to enable roaming profile and to perform a client upgrade.

When the client update occurs a new NT user called ACUAdminxxx is created. This user will by default attempt to use the roaming profile if roaming profiles are enabled and a profile exists on the network. In the event that roaming profiles are enabled and no profile exists on the network the following occurs:

1) The user is logged into NetWare
2) The ACU admin user is created in the NT SAM and a default local profile is created for the user
3) The update is performed
4) The registry is updated
5) The ACU admin user's default profile is copied to the NetWare user's home directory
6) The user is deleted
7) The workstation reboots

At this point the user has a local profile on the workstation in the %SystemRoot%\Profiles\Username sub-directory. In addition the user has a default profile on the network because the ACU admin user wrote it to the network. When the user logs in the timestamp of the local and roaming profiles are compared and since the network profile is newer the local profile is overwritten without user intervention. The result is that the user now has a default local and roaming profile.

Disable roaming profiles in the NT Configuration Object being used to perform the client upgrade.
