Situation
After installing Novell Kanaka for Mac (2.7) on Open Enterprise Server 2.0.3, Kanaka would appear to load but checking it status would show it as "unused".
In checking /var/log/messages, multiple occurrences of the following messages were found:
Jul 4 12:34:56 svr1 [NCPL]: CChannel::connectSocket- Connection creation failed, error = 111
Jul 4 12:34:56 svr1 [NCPL]: CChannel::init- Connection creation failed, error = 111

Resolution
Point "preferred-server=" in /etc/nam.conf to a server in the same tree (even the same server as Kanaka is running if nldap is running) and then run "namcd cache_refresh". This will not only restart namcd but also flush any current data.
Cause
/etc/nam.conf file was pointing to a server in a different tree.
Additional Information
In trouble shooting, it was found that novell-afptcpd was not loaded and the afptcpd.log file showed:
[afptcpd] Starting afp daemon failed because novell-xregd daemon is not up.
Please do a 'rcnovell-xregd start' as root and try to start afp.
As novell-afptcpd requires novell-xregd, checking "rcnovell-xregd start", it would fail with the following message:
Starting novell-xregd...start_daemon: No such user or user id: novlxregd
done
Checking "getent passwd" displayed that novlxregd was not in the list of users returned; however, the user did show in iManager and had the proper "linux profile" information. The problem is that /etc/nam.conf was pointing to a server in another tree. So no valid LUM users or groups could be obtained. Within a few minutes after updating /etc/nam.conf and running namcd cache_refresh, the proper users were available and novell-xregd & kanakaengined was able to run.
