How to correctly upgrade Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack / Novell GroupWise Mobility Server to SLES 11 SP3

Resolution

Before following the steps listed below, please make sure to upgrade Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack to 1.2.4 or later. Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack 1.2.3 and earlier versions do not support SLES 11 SP2.

There are different ways for updating Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Pack Server to SLES 11 SP2. The objective is to remember that using any option, it is important to configure the Mobility Media/ISO as an Add-On Product.

The following are the steps to update using YaST or booting using SLES 11 SP2 media.

YaST

Before following the steps listed in this section, make sure that the system is registered. If the Server is not registered, please use the "Novell Customer Center Configuration" module in YaST or the suse_register command line tool to register the system. Please click on the links below for information on registering the server

Registering using NCC module in YaST - https://www.suse.com/products/register.html

  1. Launch a Terminal Session
  2. Type "yast2 wagon" and press Enter
  3. Click Next to start the update. It may automatically install some needed patches and restart itself.
  4. In the Update Method Screen, select Customer Center or Custom URL as the case may be and Click Next. If Customer Center is selected, then the update will be done from the Channel. If Custom URL is selected, it gives an option to add the location for the update. This could also be the SLES 11 SP2 media.
  5. In the Migration Type, click Full and click Next.
  6. In the "Distribution Upgrade Settings" make sure to add the Mobility ISO as an "Add-On Product"  and click Update. Type the path rather than browsing to the Mobility ISO as browsing may freeze the installation. Use the Mobility ISO of the same version, that is currently installed on the system at the time of the upgrade.
  7. Click Next after adding the Add-On Product.
  8. Click Start Update.
  9. Once the Update is complete, please restart the server.

Booting from SLES 11 SP2 media

  1. Boot the server with the SLES 11 SP2 or SP3 media.
  2. Select Installation and press Enter.
  3. Select the Language and Keyboard Layout.
  4. Accept the License Agreement by selecting "I agree to the License Terms" and click Next.
  5. Click "Start Check" to check the media or click Next.
  6. Select "Update an Existing System" and make sure to click "Include Add-on Products from Separate Media" and click Next.
  7. Click No, Skip the Network Setup.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the Partition or System to update. There should be one partition selected.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click OK on the warning if any.
  12. Most of the old repositories will be removed. If needed, click Toggle Status and switch Current Status to Enabled to keep the old repositories. If not proceed with the next step.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Select CD and add the Mobility ISO as an Add-On Product. Change the media to the Mobility media and click Next. Instead of CD any other method could also be used. Use the Mobility ISO/CD of the same version, that is currently installed on the system at the time of the upgrade
  15. Click Continue on the "Insert the add-on product CD".
  16. Click Yes, I Agree to the License Agreement.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Click Next on Add-On Product Installation.
  19. Click Update.
  20. Click Start Update.
  21. Change the media back to the SLES 11 SP2 or SP3 media if it was changed in step 14 and click Retry.
  22. Once it is done with the SLES media, insert the Mobility media when/if prompted and click Retry.
  23. On Test Internet Connection page, click Yes or No as the case may be.
  24. Proceed with the installation as normal.
  25. Click Finish at the end.

Additional Information
