Environment

Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows (IR3)
OpenSLP

Situation

The Administrator desires to change the order of the SLP discovery process. For example, configuring the discovery process to use the DHCP-delivered SLP DA and Scope settings to override whatever is hard-coded could benefit mobile users whose laptops may have hard-coded SLP settings, but who are working away from their home site.

The Administrator desires to disable one or more SLP discovery options.

Resolution

Beginning with Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows (IR3), it is possible to override the default discovery sequence for Directory Agent discovery in OpenSLP. This makes it possible, for example, to force DA discovery using DHCP over manually configured DA.

To configure this, add a value "DA Discovery Sequence" of type REG_SZ under the registry key HKLM\Software\Novell\Client\Policies\Network\IP\Address Resolution Providers\OpenSLP\Parameters.

The value contains the sequence to be used for discovery of DAs, such as "DHCP,CONFIGURED,MULTICAST". The the DA discovery process will proceed in the order specified. If this property is not present, OpenSLP will be use the default DA discovery sequence of "CONFIGURED,DHCP,MULTICAST"

To disable any of the SLP discovery methods, simply remove them from the list of methods in the DA discovery sequence.

Additional Information

In the case where there is an SLP DA running on the same Windows machine where Novell Client is installed, add 127.0.0.1 to the configured SLP DA list in the "Service Location" tab of Novell Client Properties.
