Novell Messenger links are not using the default browser

Novell Messenger

Situation

Links sent through Novell Messenger opens with the wrong browser
Novell Messenger links open with Internet Explorer (IE)
User selects link, and the non-default or incorrect browser is launched to open the URL
URL links not opening with the preferred browser

Resolution

This issue has been reported to engineering. At the time of writing this document, a public fix is not available. Please follow the steps below for the workaround.

Please follow the steps below to configure the default browser for opening links within Novell Messenger:
  1. Copy the target path from the preferred browser shortcut:
    • Right click the browser shortcut, select properties
    • Select Target and then copy to clipboard
  2. Launch Microsoft Windows regedit:
    Press Windows logo key + R, and type regedit
  3. Browse to the following key by expanding the folders on the left panel:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\(Default)
  4. Right click (Default), and select Modify...
  5. Replace the old browser path with the copied path (ie. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -- "%1")
    Note: Verify the path is enclosed within double-quotes and the following as appended afterwards:  -- "%1"
  6. Press OK, and close regedit



Cause

The Novell Messenger Client is not UAC aware (Microsoft Windows User Access Control)
