Environment

Micro Focus iPrint Appliance
Open Enterprise Server with iPrint installed

Situation

How to configure iPrint to send only the user's CN to the network printer or the print server.

Resolution

There are two methods to submit the user's CN only to the network printer or print server.

Gateway Load Command:
See the USERNAME_CN section of TID 3604883.  This will cause only the CN to be submitted from the iPrint Server to the network printer or print server.

Workstation Registry:
Change the CNOnly registry key from 0 to 1.  This key is found in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell-iPrint\Settings\

Restart the Windows Print Spooler (or workstation) for this registry change to take effect.  This change will cause the iPrint client to submit only the CN to the iPrint server.  The iPrint server will then submit only the CN to the network printer or print server.

Additional Information

Some print server software or network printers have the capability of authenticating users when print jobs are submitted to the printer.  Sometimes the user format expected by the authentication process is the user CN, such as: joe

The iPrint Client, by default, will submit the user name in the full eDirectory dot notation (if the Novell Client for Windows is installed) or the user name with the machine's MAC address (if the Novell Client for Windows is not installed).

Examples of the default user formats are:

Novell Client for Windows installed (as of 2016, that client is called the OES Client):
joe.accounting.ozcorp
Novell Client for Windows not installed:
joe@00:0a:95:9d:68:16
Depending on the network printer or print server receiving the print job, the two above formats are not acceptable.  This TID shows how to change those two above formats to submit only the CN:  joe
