Workstation imports with wrong name after imaging

Environment

Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management - ZDM7
Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management - ZfD6.5
Novell ZENworks Automatic Workstation Import
Novell ZENworks Imaging

Situation

A workstation should not attempt to import after imaging, during the period when ZISWIN is running and updating the OS. If the registry is used to specify the name of an import server (HKLM\Software\Novell\zenworks\zenwsreg,"importserver") then the workstation will attempt to import - this results in it importing with the wrong name.
  1. Set up an import policy that uses computer name as part of the name for the workstation object
  2. Set the value of the import server in the registry of a workstation HKLM\Software\Novell\zenworks\zenwsreg,"importserver"="[server name]". Unregister the workstation (zwsreg -unreg). Take an image of the workstation.
  3. On a new workstation (if necessary, use zisclear to remove all the ZISD information), manually restore the image. When this finishes, use zisedit to change the workstation name
  4. Reboot

During the period when zisedit is doing its work (the panel saying that the workstation is being updated is displayed) the workstation will import, using the machine name from the image (not the name just set in zisedit). The machine will reboot at the end of this phase, and when it starts up again, there will be a machine that has the new netbios name, but its workstation object has the name from the image.

Resolution

For ZDM7: Fixed in ZENworks 7 Desktop Management Service Pack 1 Interim Release 3a, see KB 3484245 "Updates to Novell ZENworks 7 Desktop Management" which can be found at https://www.novell.com/support

As a workaround, delete the "bad" workstation object, and when the workstation next reboots, it will import again using the correct name.
