The scan program collects the following hardware information:
The scan programs scan PCMCIA modems on Windows 95* and Windows 98 workstations. Details of the modem scanned include: Modem Description, Modem Manufacturer, and the communications port over which the modem is connected to.
If you want to scan new IBM Computer Models, refer to Scanning for IBM Computer Models.
NOTE: Asset Tag for Dell Machines
Download the ASSET.COM utility from http://support.dell.com. Use this utility to set the Asset Tag for workstations that do not have this information.
The functions of the scan programs for software scanning include the following:
NOTE: The Configuration files entries exist in the software description file (LDAPPL.INI).
By default, the following entries exist in LDAPPL.INI:
CfgFiles1=c:\config.sys c:\autoexec.bat
CfgFiles2=\windows\win.ini \windows\system.ini
CfgFiles3=c:\nwclient\startnet.bat c:\nwclient\net.cfg
You can view the following scan details for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT* workstations.
The Inventory Scan Program (WINSCAN.EXE) uses the IBMNAMES.INI file to get information about IBM® Computer Models. The Scan Program reads the Model name using the Machine Type and Model Number information specified in the IBMNAMES.INI file. This file is located in the SYS:\PUBLIC\ZENWORKS directory of the Inventory server. Using the IBMNAMES.INI file is a IBM specific method of scanning Model Names of IBM Computers defined by the Scan program. If you have a new IBM Computer Model, which is not listed in the IBMNAMES.INI file, the Model Number of the workstation will not be scanned by the Scan program. You must edit the IBMNAMES.INI file to add the Machine Type, Model Number and Model Description of the new IBM computer. By adding this entry, you enable the Scan program to identify the new model name. You can edit the file to add entries in the IBMNAMES.INI file following the same format specified in the file. On adding the entries in this file, the Scan Program will scan for the specified Model. IBMNAMES.INI contains the Model Number and Model description of IBM desktops and laptop models. A sample IBMNAMES.INI file is as follows: This file begins with a section: [Product Names]. The format of each entry in the section is as follows: 4 Bytes Machine Type-3 Bytes Model Number=Model Description For example, if the model is IBM PC 140, the Machine Type is 6260, you can specify the Model Description as IBM PC 140. The entry in the IBMNAMES.INI is 6260-79T = IBM PC 140 If you want the Scan Program to scan for all IBM Computer models of a particular Machine Type, which has the same Model Description, the 3 Byte Model Number is specified with the following wildcard character ??? For example, to scan all the Models of a 6282 Machine Type with same Model Description, the entry in the file is as follows: 6282-???=IBM PC 300GL (6282) NOTE:
If you want to know the Machine Type and Model Number, these details are printed at the rear of the laptop or backside of the desktop. Identify the correct Machine Type and Model Number of the IBM Computer Model. Usually, the 4 Bytes Machine Type and 3 Bytes Model Number are printed as a label on the rear of the Computer. For example, the 760E Thinkpad model has the following label: TYPE 9546-A98Scanning for IBM Computer Models
