Navigating the help system

exteNd help offers three main ways to locate information within the system: the contents, the master index, and the full-text search facility. To switch from one of these facilities to another, click the appropriate button in the navigation bar at the top of the help display—Contents, Index, or Search.

If you have accessed help by clicking a Help button in an exteNd product, you will not see the navigation pane or the Contents, Index, and Search buttons. To display the navigation pane, click the Show navigation pane button at the top left of the help display.

The navigation bar also includes devices for changing the help display, accessing help for other exteNd products, and accessing information on the Web.

The following sections describe all of these facilities in more detail.

Contents

When you click the Contents button, the navigation pane displays contents of the help system.

When you click an item that follows a book icon or folder icon, the corresponding section expands or collapses, depending on the state it is in when you click it.

When you click an item that follows a page icon (a dog-eared page with a question mark) or a folder icon, the help topic associated with that icon appears in the right-hand pane.

When you open a help topic this way, the contents reorients itself to the topic. But when you jump directly from one topic to another by following a link in the open topic, the contents does not reorient itself to the new topic.

Master index

The master index provides an alphabetical list of keywords and subjects in the help system in the form of a traditional back-of-the-book index. Most entries in the master index are followed by one or more book icons, each of which is a link to a topic in the help system.

You can orient the master index to the beginning of any letter's section by clicking that letter in the portion of the navigation pane immediately below the Contents, Index, and Search buttons. If one of these letters is grayed out, it means that there are no index entries starting with that letter.

Full-text search

The full-text search facility of exteNd help allows you to find all the topics that contain any of the keywords you specify.

The full-text search facility uses the JavaHelp search engine. All necessary components of the JavaHelp search engine (except the JRE itself) are installed with the help system. JRE 1.3 or higher is recommended.

Procedure To perform a full-text search:

  1. Type one or more keywords in the Find box and press Enter.

The results of your search are listed in order of relevance. For each found page, the result list displays a symbol and a number indicating the relevancy of the page to the keyword(s).

  2. Click any item in the result list to display the corresponding page in the right-hand pane of the help display.

All occurrences of your search keyword(s) are highlighted, and the page is oriented to the first occurrence.

Browser requirements

Novell exteNd product help is browser-based and browser-independent, using standard HTML and JavaScript. The JavaHelp search engine is also used as the basis for the full-text search facility.

Make sure that both Java and JavaScript are enabled in your browser. Also make sure your browser's memory cache is set to at least the browser's default value. Otherwise, help might not display properly.

Adjusting help text size

The exteNd help system uses a cascading style sheet (CSS) to set the font size and other attributes of the content it displays. If necessary, you can configure your browser to override the style sheet's font size settings. For example, you might want to display the help text using a larger font size.

Procedure In Internet Explorer 5.5 and later:

  1. Select Tools>Internet Options.

  2. On the General tab, click the Accessibility button.

  3. Check Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages and click OK to close each dialog.

  4. Select View>Text Size to adjust the font display size in the browser.

Procedure In Netscape 6 and later:
