Implementation Suggestions

This section provides only a summary of implementation pointers. For complete implementation information, see the Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide and the online help available in an installed GroupWise 6.5 Collaboration Client.

Upgrading to NetMail 3.5

The NNLS installation scripts perform only new installations. They will not upgrade an existing installation.

If you are upgrading from a previous NetMail version, you must following the instructions in "Upgrading to NetMail 3.5" in the Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide.

Installing NetMail 3.5

To install NetMail 3.5 on a new server, follow the instructions in the Novell Nterprise Linux Services Installation Guide.

NetMail 3.5

The NNLS installation creates and configures all the agents and other objects that a basic NetMail 3.5 system requires, including the following:

This section outlines the additional steps you need to perform to begin providing basic e-mail services using NetMail 3.5.

The Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide provides extensive information on the capabilities of NetMail 3.5 and is an excellent source for helping you customize your NetMail installation.

Setting Up Users and Address Books

Before users can begin using your e-mail system, you will need to create User objects for them in eDirectoryTM. You might also want to provide one or more address books for them to use.

  1. Create one or more eDirectory containers for your network users.

  2. Configure the NMAP agent with one or more eDirectory contexts for your NetMail users.

For more information, see "Configuring the NMAP Agent " (the Context option) in the Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide.

The context of your NNLS server is automatically configured for e-mail services. However, most administrators prefer to define separate contexts for network users.

  3. Create users in the contexts you have created and configured.

  4. Configure the Address Book agent.

For more information, see "Configuring the Address Book Agent" in the Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide.

Monitoring Disk Space Usage

You should closely monitor the disk space used for event logging (Nsure Audit data store). The volume of events logged causes store data to grow rapidly. If the data store and the local cache run out of disk space, the messaging system stops.

For more information, see "Auditing Your Messaging System" in the Novell NetMail 3.5 Administration Guide.

GroupWise Collaboration Client

To install the client on a Windows workstation:

  1. Insert the Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 Companion CD into the workstation's CD drive.

  2. Browse to the \win32 directory and run setup.exe.

  3. In the Select StartUp Folder Software dialog box, make sure GroupWise Notify is deselected.

Notify detects incoming mail, but the sender information shown is not correct.

  4. In the Software Integrations dialog box, make sure all software programs are deselected.

Installing software integrations with the Collaboration Client causes the client to generate errors.

To begin using the GroupWise client with NetMail, see "Using the Novell GroupWise 6.5 Collaboration Client for Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 (v6.5 for NNLS 1.0)" in the GroupWise 6.5 Windows Client User Guide.
