5.7 Managing Bookmarks

Bookmarks offer a handy way of returning to a Web site that you have visited before.

To add the current Web site to your list of bookmarks, click BookmarksBookmark This Page. If your browser currently displays multiple Web sites on tabs, only the URL on the currently selected tab is added to your list of bookmarks.

When you add a bookmark, you can specify an alternate name for the bookmark and you can select a folder where Firefox should store it. If you want to bookmark Web sites on multiple tabs, click Bookmark All Tabs in a Folder in the Add Bookmark dialog. Firefox creates a new folder that includes bookmarks of each site displayed on each tab.

To remove a Web site from the bookmarks list, click Bookmarks, right-click the site's bookmark in the list, and then click Delete.

5.7.1 Using Bookmarks Manager

Bookmarks Manager can be used to manage the properties (name, address location) for each bookmark, as well as organize the bookmarks into folders and separate sections. You can rearrange, automatically sort, edit, and import or export bookmarks.

5.7.3 Adding or Editing Bookmark Properties

Use the Bookmark Properties dialog to specify or edit the following:

  • Name:The name that appears on the toolbar. It is prefilled with the page’s title. If the title is long, it is a good idea to edit the bookmark name to free up space on the toolbar.

  • Location:The Web address (URL) of the site/page you bookmarked.

  • Keyword:A shortcut to Web sites. Using a keyword is a great way to easily access your favorite sites. For example, you can enter news as the keyword for your favorite news site. Then simply typing news in the browser's address bar (where you would normally enter the site’s address) will take you to this site.

  • Description:You can add a description for your site here. This can be useful if you have many bookmarks or the site’s address or name doesn't indicate what the site is about.

Select Load this bookmark in the sidebar to make the bookmarked page load in Firefox’s sidebar instead of in the browser window.

5.7.4 Sorting Bookmarks

You can sort your bookmarks manually by dragging-and-dropping them to a new position, or by using the automatic sort function in Bookmarks Manager.

To access the automatic sort function, click the View menu in Bookmarks Manager. You can choose to sort by name, location, keyword, description, last modified, last visited, or alphabetically (A-Z or Z-A).

This rearranges the bookmark order in Bookmark Manager. If you want to rearrange the order in which they appear when you select Bookmarks, right-click any bookmark in the browser window (not in Bookmark Manager) and then click Sort By Name.
