Inventory data is not stored for Windows NT/2000 workstations with a null MAC address (000000000000)

Problem:  If the inventory scanner reports a null MAC address (000000000000)for Windows NT/2000 workstations, the inventory data is not stored for those workstations.

Workstation Inventory identifies workstations based on the their MAC addresses. The inventory of the workstations is not stored if there are duplicate MAC addresses. It is also possible that inventory data of one workstation will be overwritten by some other workstation scan data. Also, the Inventory Summary will not display any inventory data for the workstation.

Action:  Ensure that you have installed ZfD3.2.

Follow these steps:

  1. Stop the Inventory service and database:

On NetWare servers, at the inventory server prompt, enter java -killall

On Windows NT/2000 servers, stop the ZENworks Inventory Service.

  2. Disable scanning of workstations. In ConsoleOne, invoke the Inventory Service object property page, then uncheck the Enable Scan of Workstation check box.

  3. Delete the scan data files (.STR and .ZIP) from the SYS:\ZENWORKS\SCANDIR and SYS:\ZENWORKS\SCANDIR\TEMP directories.

  4. Make these changes:

    • For a Sybase database, copy the database files (MGMTDB.DB, MGMTDB1.DB, MGMTDB2.DB, MGMTDB3.DB, MGMTDB4.DB, MGMTDB5.DB, MGMTDB6.DB, MGMTDB7.DB, MGMTDB8.DB, and MGMTDB9.DB) from ZfD 3.2 Program CD to the \ZENWORKS\DATABASE directory.
    • For an Oracle database, follow the instructions in Configuring the Inventory Database for Oracle in Deployment.

  5. Enable scanning of workstations.

    1. In ConsoleOne, right-click the Inventory Service object (servername_ZenInvservice) > click Properties > click the Inventory Service Object Properties tab.

    2. Click Enable Scan of Workstations.

    3. Click Full Scan.

  6. Start the Inventory services.

To run the Inventory Services on a NetWare server: at the server prompt, enter startinv.

On a Windows NT/2000 server, start the Inventory Service Manager (ZENworks Inventory Service).

Verify the inventory information in the Workstation Inventory Summary window.

NOTE:  To resolve the null address problem with workstations for ZfD3 Support Pack 1, refer to the Technical Information Document at the Novell Support web site.
