3.6 Using the Portable Collector

The Portable Collector is a standalone application that is used to inventory devices that rarely connect to the server or devices that do not have the ZENworks Agent installed. This data can then be imported into the Inventoried device list. When the data is imported, you can view and edit it just as you would an inventoried device. The Portable Collector can be run on Windows, Linux and OS X devices.

NOTE:The Inventory Only scan settings are used when you create the Portable Collector. If you want the Portable Collector to scan for software files, for example, that option must be selected on the Inventory Only configuration page. For information on configuring an Inventory Only scan, see Section 3.1, Configuring an Inventory Only Scan.

3.6.1 Running the Portable Collector on a Windows Device

  1. In the ZENworks Control Center, click Devices.

  2. In the Device Tasks list, click Create Portable Client.

  3. Save and uncompress the file.

  4. Copy the Portable Collector files to a removable media, such as a CD or flash drive.

  5. Take the Portable Collector to the device you want to inventory, then run ZENCollector.exe file in the Administrator mode.

    The inventory XML (WIF) file will be created inside the wif folder.

  6. Continue with Section 3.6.4, Importing Data Gathered with the Portable Collector.

3.6.2 Running the Portable Collector on an OS X Device

  1. Navigate to https://<zenworks_server or host_name:port_number>/zenworks-setup/

  2. Click Inventory Tools.

  3. Click osxportable.dmg to download it to the desktop.

  4. Mount the osxportable.dmg file.

  5. Create a temporary folder, copy the contents of osxportable, which is available in the /Volumes/osxportable folder.

  6. Open a terminal window (You must be a user with administrative privileges). Run ./zenumia-portable /full/path/to/output/directory.

    The inventory XML file (WIF) file be generated in the output directory folder.

  7. Import the file into ZENworks Control Center as shown in Section 3.6.4, Importing Data Gathered with the Portable Collector.

3.6.3 Running the Portable Collector on a Linux Device

Prerequisites:

  • Ensure that your device is running JDK 1.8 or above.

  • Package management tools using RPM, such as SUSE / RHEL-based are the only supported platforms.

NOTE:Linux OS platforms like Debian 11.x (using package manager) would not allow running software inventory when launching launch-portable-collector.sh and inventory scan would fail.

  1. Navigate to https://<zenworks_server or host_name:port_number>/zenworks-setup/

  2. Click Inventory Tools.

  3. Click Linux_Portable.tar.gz to download it to the desktop.

  4. Extract the Linux_Portable.tar.gz file.

  5. Open a terminal window (You must be a user with administrative privileges). Run ./launch-portable-collector.sh.

    The inventory XML (WIF) file will be generated in the final directory.

  6. Import the file into ZENworks Control Center as shown in Section 3.6.4, Importing Data Gathered with the Portable Collector.

3.6.4 Importing Data Gathered with the Portable Collector

  1. In ZENworks Control Center, click Devices.

  2. In the Device Tasks list, click Import Inventory.

  3. In the Import Inventory pop-up window, click Browse, select the inventory XML (WIF) file, and then click OK.

    The inventoried device appears in the device lists in Devices > Inventoried, click the device name to see the inventory data.
