33.1 Overview

Review the following information to understand the functions of the SP1upgrade.

For information about the changes in SP1, see Section 28.5, What’s New in ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with Support Pack 1.

33.1.1 What to Expect from the SP1 Installation

  • The SP1 installation program uses the original ZENworks 7 Desktop Management installation paths to discover and upgrade the ZENworks 7 Desktop Management software.

  • The SP1 installation program automatically stops and restarts services (except for the Inventory service) if they are running on a server.

  • SP1 files are always copied, replacing both older and newer files with the upgraded files. Files copied to other locations outside of the ZENworks directories are replaced only if they are older.

  • The SP1 installation upgrades the ConsoleOne® snap-ins to ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with SP1 on both the installation workstation and on any target servers found by the upgrade wizard. For the ConsoleOne check box to show as selected, the version of the snap-ins previously installed must be version 7.

  • The installation program upgrades an installation of ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3, ZENworks for Desktops 4.x, ZENworks 6.5x Desktop Management, and ZENwork 7 Desktop Management to ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with Support Pack 1.

33.1.2 What the SP1 Installation Program Does Not Do

  • The installation program does not allow you to deselect any feature check boxes in the installation program. Their status is determined by the installation program when you select the servers for upgrading.

  • If you are upgrading the Inventory server, the installation program does not automatically start the Inventory service. You must manually start the service after the SP1 upgrade.

  • When you upgrade from ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 to ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with SP1, the SP1 installation program lists components, such as Remote Management Wake-On-LAN and Inventory Proxy, that were not available for the 3.2x release. If you want these newer components to be included in your upgrade, select them for installation when you see them displayed.

  • When you upgrade to ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with Support Pack 1 Services on Linux, the installation program does not detect components that were previously installed. All components are selected for installation by default.

33.1.3 Incrementally Upgrading Your Network Servers

You can upgrade all ZENworks servers (in a single eDirectory tree) to ZENworks 7 Desktop Management with SP1 in one pass, or incrementally (such as geographical locations).

The SP1 installation program updates servers one at a time. If you have several servers, consider the time that it might take to upgrade all of them in one installation session. If that single session might take too long, select target servers in groups so that you can upgrade one group at a time.
