Planning Your Installation

We recommend that you install Server Inventory from the ZENworks for Servers 3 program CD. However, if you need to copy the CD structure to a hard drive, the path between the root of the hard drive and the first CD directory can contain only directory names that conform to the 8.3-character DOS file naming convention. If any long directory names exist in the path, the installation program will not work.

Before you can install ZfS 3 Server Inventory, you must perform the following tasks:

Determining the Target Tree Where eDirectory Objects Will Be Created

Although you can install ZfS objects to only one tree at a time, you can install ZfS Server Inventory to all of the servers in your whole network in one run of the Installation Wizard. Make sure that the schema has been extended on all the trees in your network. You can also install ZfS incrementally by installing to groups of servers, which we recommend for large or complex networks.

If you have more than one eDirectory tree in your network, decide which tree you want to use to manage the ZfS objects.

Determining and Preparing the Inventory Server

Identify the servers that you want to be your Inventory server.

After determining the Inventory server, you must perform the following tasks:

Determining and Preparing the Inventoried Servers

Identify the inventoried servers and determine each server's Distinguished Name (DN).

IMPORTANT:  For Windows servers, the server's DNS short name must be the same as the server's name. Either rename Windows servers where the server's name does not match its DNS short name before running the installation, or do not select these servers for installation of Server Inventory.

After determining the inventoried servers, you must perform the following tasks:

Determining and Preparing the Management Console

You can install ConsoleOne on a local machine or a server. "Local machine" refers to either the Windows 95/98 workstation or the Windows NT/2000 server you are using to perform the installation.

We recommend a Windows NT/2000 workstation or server as the best location for running ConsoleOne to administer ZfS 3 Server Inventory.

If you are running ConsoleOne on Windows 95/98 workstation, you cannot install ZfS 3 Server Inventory ConsoleOne snap-ins on the workstation from the ZfS 3 installation program. You must install ZfS 3 Server Inventory ConsoleOne snap-ins on a NetWare server or a Windows NT/2000 machine and manually copy the ConsoleOne directory to the Windows 95/98 workstation.

If you want to install the ZfS 3 Server Inventory ConsoleOne snap-ins to a NetWare or a Windows server, you must map a drive to that server and run its instance of ConsoleOne from a workstation. You cannot administer ZfS 3 Server Inventory directly on the NetWare server by running ConsoleOne from the server's GUI interface.

Determining and Preparing the Database Server

During installation, you need to identify the server where you would like the database files to reside. The Inventory database and related database files will be installed on the servers your specify. You can install the database on the same server as you have selected for the Inventory server or on to a different server.

If you choose to install the Sybase database and it is already running on the server, be sure to quit the database process before proceeding with the installation program.

Determining and Preparing the Proxy Server

If you want to send or roll up the scan data to an Inventory server that is across the firewall, you must configure a NetWare 5.1/6 or Windows NT/2000 server to run the XML Proxy service.

During the ZfS 3 installation program, you need to identify the server where you would want to run the XML Proxy Service.
